is there a way to get animated gif images, that are higher quality than the ones i have now? it seems to throw out half the colours i have originally.

.as you have noticed gif images are like 256 colours only, sadly i am not aware of any other animated web-friendly image types of higher colour (note look below) .you might wanna learn to use flash, although i don't think a flash animated background would be too hot (will slow ur comp down :p)
.checkout:http://slideplay.blogspot.com/ for example of a apng (true colour) but you may notice it's 1.6mb so takes ages to load plus firefox 3 only.
